چکیده

Although the selective forces responsible for the evolution of mating systems and sexual size dimorphism have been the subjects of intensive research, most studies rely on data from only one or a few years (e.g., Clutton-Brock 1988). Temporal variation in the importance of alternative reproductive tactics, or in consequent selective pressures on behavior or morphology, has not been documented from long-term studies. Nonetheless, the magnitude of such variation and the factors responsible for it are of central importance to any attempt to infer long-term evolutionary pressures from short-term data on the direction and intensity of selection. Previous authors have suggested, on the basis of variation in sex ratios within a single breeding season (Arak 1983; Verrell 1983) or interspecific

Reproductive strategies in snakes.

Snakes of both sexes display remarkable flexibility and diversity in their reproductive tactics. Many features of reproduction in female snakes (such as reproductive mode and frequency, seasonality and multiple mating) allow flexible maternal control. For example, females can manipulate not only the genotypes of their offspring (through mate choice or enhanced sperm competition) but also the ph...

Sexual size dimorphism of the tongue in a North American pitviper

Sexual dimorphisms – phenotypic dissimilarities between the sexes – are common and widespread among plants and animals, and classical examples include differences in body size, colour, shape, ornamentation and behaviour. In general, sexual dimorphisms are hypothesized to evolve by way of sexual selection acting on one sex through priority-of-access for sexual partners via mate choice and/or int...

Sexual Size Dimorphism and Growth Plasticity in Snakes: an Experiment on the Western Diamondâ•’Backed Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox)

We conducted an experiment to examine the effects of sex and food intake on growth, mass gain, and attainment of sexual maturity in Western Diamond‐backed Rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox). We also measured testosterone levels to determine whether testosterone might be involved in the male‐biased sexual size dimorphism observed in this species. We collected neonate rattlesnakes and raised them in t...

Correlated evolution between targets of pre‐ and postcopulatory sexual selection across squamate reptiles

Sexual selection reflects the joint contributions of precopulatory selection, which arises from variance in mating success, and postcopulatory selection, which arises from variance in fertilization success. The relative importance of each episode of selection is variable among species, and comparative evidence suggests that traits targeted by precopulatory selection often covary in expression w...

The interplay between natural and sexual selection in the evolution of sexual size dimorphism in Sceloporus lizards (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae)

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) evolves because body size is usually related to reproductive success through different pathways in females and males. Female body size is strongly correlated with fecundity, while in males, body size is correlated with mating success. In many lizard species, males are larger than females, whereas in others, females are the larger sex, suggesting that selection on fe...
